How to export Instagram messages
In short: Instagram → Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → choose Messages, format JSON. When the file arrives, upload the conversation's message_1.json (or the whole folder zipped).
Request your messages
- Open Instagram → your profile → ☰ → Accounts Center.
- Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information.
- Pick your Instagram account → Some of your information → tick Messages.
- Choose Download to device, date range All time, and Format: JSON (not HTML).
- Create files. Instagram emails you when it's ready (minutes to a few hours).
Find the conversation
- Unzip the download and open your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/.
- Each folder is one conversation (named after the person). Inside are message_1.json, message_2.json…
- Upload message_1.json — or zip that folder and upload the .zip to include every part.

FAQ
Why JSON and not HTML?
JSON keeps exact timestamps and senders, which the report needs. If you already chose HTML, request a new download in JSON.
Do the other people get notified?
No. Downloading your information is private.
Weird characters like 'é' in names?
That's how Meta encodes accents. We fix it automatically.
