How to export a WhatsApp chat

In short: Open the chat → tap the contact or group name → Export Chat → Without Media. iPhone gives you a .zip, Android a .txt. Save it to Files or Drive, then drop it into the uploader above for a free report.

On iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and the chat (or group) you want.
  2. Tap the contact or group name at the top.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media (smaller, faster — photos are never needed).
  5. Pick Save to Files, or AirDrop / email it to the computer you'll use.

You get a file like “WhatsApp Chat - Name.zip” containing _chat.txt. Upload the .zip as-is.

On Android

  1. Open the chat and tap ⋮ (top right).
  2. Tap More → Export chat.
  3. Choose Without media.
  4. Save to Google Drive or Files, or send it to yourself.

You get “WhatsApp Chat with Name.txt”. Any phone language and date format works.

On WhatsApp Web or Desktop

  1. Export isn't available on WhatsApp Web. Export on your phone and send the file to your computer.

FAQ

Does exporting tell the other person?

No. Exporting is private to your phone; nobody in the chat is notified.

How many messages does the export include?

WhatsApp exports up to about 40,000 recent messages without media (10,000 with media). That's plenty for a report.

Can I export a group chat?

Yes, the steps are the same. Group reports include awards and a page per member.

My export is huge — is that OK?

Choose Without Media. Files up to 60 MB work and are read entirely on your device.
